Jonard Tools: How We Migrated a 1700+ Product E-Commerce Platform to Drupal 10 and Kept It Growing

Overview

Jonard Tools has been manufacturing professional-grade tools since 1958 and has grown into a globally recognized brand with over 900 unique products shipping to all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Their website, jonard.com, is a large and feature-rich Drupal platform that serves as their primary product showcase, e-commerce store, distributor hub, and content destination. We migrated the site from Drupal 9 to Drupal 10 and have since become the team responsible for its ongoing maintenance and active feature development, continuously building out new and complex functionality on top of an already substantial platform.

About the Client

Jonard Tools is headquartered in Elmsford, New York and manufactures tools for the Telecom, CATV, Fiber Optic, Home Automation, Security and Alarm, Electrical, Solar, and Utility markets. They release new tools every month, back every product with their Made For Life lifetime warranty, and ship 98.7% of all orders complete within 24 hours. Their customer base spans professional tradespeople, field technicians, utility linemen, solar installers, and IT infrastructure teams across more than 100 countries. They maintain an active presence at over 20 tradeshows worldwide each year and a strong following across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn.

Goals

The immediate goal was to migrate the existing Drupal 9 site to Drupal 10 without disrupting any of the live functionality, commerce operations, or content that Jonard’s team and customers depended on. Drupal 9’s end of life made this a time-sensitive transition for a site of considerable complexity. Beyond the migration itself, Jonard wanted a long-term development partner who could take ownership of the platform and help them build new features at the pace their business demands, including additions to their e-commerce capabilities, customer-facing tools, distributor features, and content infrastructure.

Challenges

Migrating a site of this scope is not a straightforward version upgrade. jonard.com is built on Drupal Commerce and carries an extensive catalog of over 900 products organized across 15 top-level categories and dozens of sub-categories. The product data includes detailed specifications, multiple variants, compliance information, related products, and imagery at scale, all of which needed to carry over intact.

The site also had a significant number of contributed and custom modules that needed to be evaluated, updated, or rebuilt for Drupal 10 compatibility. Any module that had not kept pace with Drupal 10’s standards had to be addressed before the migration could be considered complete, and doing this without breaking live commerce or content operations required careful planning and testing.

Beyond the migration, the ongoing development work is where the real complexity sits. Jonard’s site is not a static product showcase. It is a constantly evolving platform where new products launch monthly, new features are requested based on customer and distributor feedback, and integrations with external systems need to be maintained and extended. Each new piece of functionality has to work correctly within a large, interconnected Drupal Commerce environment without introducing regressions elsewhere.

Solutions

We carried out a comprehensive Drupal 9 to Drupal 10 migration, auditing the full module landscape, updating all compatible modules, rebuilding or replacing anything that lacked Drupal 10 support, and validating the complete site against a staging environment before cutover. The commerce layer, product catalog, and all existing content were preserved through the migration with no data loss and no disruption to ongoing orders or distributor operations.

With the migration complete, we took on ongoing maintenance and active development of the platform. The site’s architecture serves several distinct audiences and we work across all of them.

The product catalog spans categories including Fiber Optics, Electrical, CATV/COAX/VDV, Network/IT, Low Voltage, Hand Tools, Cable and Wire Strippers, Solar, Utility, Lighting, Tool Bags, Wire, and Gear. The mega menu navigation surfaces featured and new products from each category directly in the dropdown, giving professionals fast access to specific tools without browsing through multiple levels of pages. A quick-access utility bar at the top of every page provides direct links to the six most-used market segments.

Among the more distinctive features we have developed is the My Toolbox system, which allows logged-in users to create named custom toolboxes, add products to them, and maintain multiple toolboxes representing different job types or trade setups. This gives Jonard’s professional customers a persistent, personalized connection to the products they rely on daily and a direct path back to reorder or check specifications.

The Jonard Merch store under the Gear section handles branded apparel and accessories including hoodies, t-shirts, beanies, travel mugs, water bottles, gaiters, and specialty items like the SPARC Fusion Splicer car air freshener. This runs through the same Drupal Commerce system as the professional tool catalog, keeping the checkout experience consistent across very different product types.

The Where to Buy section serves the distributor network with an interactive map covering US and Canada, a separate international distributor listing, and an online retailers finder, along with dedicated application forms for businesses in North America, Latin America, and EMEA looking to become distributors.

The Resources section is an extensive content hub we actively maintain and extend, covering the Made For Life warranty program, a media center with videos, blogs, and podcasts, downloadable catalogs and brochures, compliance documents, the Inventors Lab, news and product releases, trade show listings, product registration, and the Brand Ambassador Program.

Results

The Drupal 10 migration was completed without disruption to Jonard’s commerce operations or content workflows, giving them a supported, future-ready platform as the foundation for everything that follows. Since taking on ongoing development, we have been shipping new functionality at the pace Jonard’s business demands, with new products launching monthly and new features being added continuously. The My Toolbox feature has deepened the relationship between Jonard and the tradespeople who use their tools daily, giving professionals a reason to log in and engage with the site beyond the point of purchase. The site now serves as a genuinely comprehensive destination for Jonard’s customers, distributors, and brand community worldwide, and our ongoing partnership means it continues to evolve alongside the business.
