Overview
As a Drupal development studio, we spend our working days building complex, bespoke Drupal websites for clients. But we also recognized an opportunity to use that deep expertise to create something that benefits the broader Drupal community. DrupalThemes.io is our own product, a self-built e-commerce platform where developers, agencies, and businesses can browse, preview, and purchase premium Drupal 10 and Drupal 11 themes. The site is built on Drupal with Drupal Commerce and represents both our commitment to the Drupal ecosystem and a demonstration of our own capabilities as a studio.
Goals
The core goal was to create a self-service marketplace where anyone looking to build a Drupal website, whether a freelancer, an in-house developer, or a non-technical business owner, could find a polished, ready-to-use theme for their specific industry without commissioning a bespoke build. We wanted the catalog to be broad enough to cover the most common website categories while keeping every theme to a consistently high standard of code quality, mobile responsiveness, and SEO-friendliness. The platform itself also needed to handle purchases, downloads, customer accounts, and ongoing theme support with minimal manual overhead on our end.
Challenges
Building a theme marketplace has a chicken-and-egg quality to it. The platform only becomes useful once it has enough themes to cover a range of needs, but building a comprehensive catalog of well-designed, properly coded themes is a substantial investment of time and expertise. Every theme we sell needs to be production-ready, comply with Drupal’s coding standards, work correctly on both Drupal 10 and Drupal 11, and be maintainable over time as Drupal itself evolves.
Positioning was another consideration. The Drupal theme market is not as crowded as WordPress, but that cuts both ways. There are fewer options for buyers, which is the opportunity, but there is also less established buyer behavior around purchasing Drupal themes, which means the site needs to educate as well as sell. The content on the site needs to do real work convincing developers and decision-makers that a premium theme is a better starting point than building from scratch, and that our themes specifically are worth the investment.
The support side of a theme marketplace is also an ongoing operational commitment. Buyers have questions about installation, customization, and compatibility, and the reputation of the platform depends on responding to those questions well and keeping themes updated as Drupal releases new versions.
Solutions
We built DrupalThemes.io on Drupal with Drupal Commerce, a deliberate choice that means the platform itself is a living demonstration of what Drupal can do. The commerce layer handles purchasing, license management, and file delivery, giving buyers instant access to their downloads after purchase with no manual processing required.
The theme catalog spans over 50 premium themes across 12 industry categories including Agency, Blog and News, Business and Corporate, Charity, Creative, Directory and Listing, Education, Entertainment, Healthcare, Hotel, eCommerce, and more. Every theme is compatible with both Drupal 10 and Drupal 11, ensuring buyers are not purchasing something that will become outdated quickly.
Each theme listing includes a live demo so buyers can explore the design in full before purchasing, alongside a detail page covering the theme’s features and compatible Drupal versions. The demo system is one of the most important conversion tools on the site because it removes the guesswork from the purchase decision entirely.
The catalog is filterable by Drupal version and by category, making it straightforward for a buyer who knows they need, for example, a healthcare theme compatible with Drupal 11 to find exactly what they are looking for in a few clicks. The filtering works across both dimensions simultaneously so the experience stays focused regardless of how specific the buyer’s requirements are.
The platform includes a support section for post-purchase assistance covering installation help, bug fixes, and general guidance. Our team handles support directly, which means buyers are getting answers from the same developers who built the themes rather than a third-party support desk.
Regular updates are a core part of the offering. As Drupal evolves and new versions are released, we update the themes to maintain compatibility. This is communicated clearly to buyers as a key reason to purchase from us rather than from a marketplace that sells themes and moves on.
The homepage and below-the-fold content do significant educational work, explaining what Drupal themes are, why Drupal remains one of the most capable and mature CMS platforms available, and what distinguishes our themes specifically, including clean code, quick installation, responsive design, and ongoing support. This content serves the buyer who already knows they want a Drupal theme as much as the one who is still evaluating the platform itself.
Results
DrupalThemes.io operates as a fully self-service product that generates ongoing revenue for the studio while contributing something genuinely useful to the Drupal community. Buyers from around the world can find, preview, and purchase a professional Drupal theme in minutes without any involvement from our team. Customer feedback consistently highlights the quality of both the themes and the post-purchase support as the standout aspects of the experience. The catalog continues to grow as we develop new themes for additional industries and use cases, and the platform evolves as we add new features and keep everything current with the latest Drupal releases. It is also, perhaps more than anything else, a public demonstration of what our studio knows how to do.
